Hand no. 1:
♠AQ3 ♥AT ♦AQJ82 ♣Q94
nonvul vs vul; opponents are good players;
1♣ - 3♣ - pas* - pas
????
*our agreements are that dbl would show any GF without other bid; 3♦/3♥/3♠ would be game forcing so pass is 0-7 basically
What do you do now ?
Hand no. 2:
♠K4 ♥3 ♦AKQ942 ♣KQJ2; nobody vul; same opponents
1♣ - 2♠ - dbl - 3♠
?????
Our agreement is that dbl is 6-7hcp any shape;
Is pass forcing here ? Is 4♦ forcing ?
It would be a bit easier with forcing pass but we only promised 22+hcp so I am not sure if it should be (it would suck to bid anything with 17hcp and NT shape)
Anyway what do you do now ?

If they overcall 2♣ and higher, IMO it's best to play that a new suit is a positive and double is for takeout and may be semi-positive. There's no way to really prove it but I think this puts you in the best position to find a fit and bid game when you have one, or stop in a partscore or pass it out when that is right. Passing with any 0-7 makes it too hard for opener to decide and expands the range of hands they might hold when they do act. Doubling with any shape likewise makes the continuations difficult.
Given your agreements I would guess 3NT on 1, and probably 5♦ (with 3NT close second choice) on 2.

I agree with Nigel. Passing with any 0-7 puts you behind the 8 ball. You now have to guess.

I would open 2NT on the first one. I would bid 3NT on the second.

I don't understand 3N on the first one; it feels like an automatic pass to me.

Yes seems like a definite pass on the first one. Even if double is GF partner should stretch to do it with 7 (or even sometimes 6) routinely.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I think I might bid 3♦ on the first one. Pass is my second choice.
On the second I think I bid 4♦ and I think it is forcing (trying to stop on a dime in 4 of a minor on this auction seems too narrow, and hands where we want two bids seems much more frequent opposite the semi-positive double). I don't think pass by us would be forcing; however, partner would often compete.

After M (spades in 2nd), X implies no like Hearts (other Major).
After minor spaced up, X implies no like "implied" Major (I use Spades to encourage H-bid cheaper).
Now pass has no message (as above to send) either i) busted and making no suggestion or ii) semi-positive values but no suggestion.
Semi-positive gets in there.
Real GF must next Q or take control.

If you bid 4♦ on the second hand, what do you do over 4♥ by partner? What do 4♠, 4NT and 5♣ mean now?

I guess you can pass 4♥ as partner should have 6+hearts for that (you didn't t/o double so partner won't/shouldn't bid a 5card suit there)
Now ? You mean by opener or responder ?
