Scoring: MP

1-(X)-p-(2)
3-(4)-p-(p)
5-(p)-p-(5)
X-AP

5Sx = -650

Obviously, a low diamond lead and a heart return can beat it double dummy, but underleading AK isn't really the first lead thought of here...

West's pass over 4S is terrible, east did all he could do.

I'd probly bid 1D over the X, would certainly bid 5D over the 4S and its not close, would not consider Xing 5S with the east hand, seems pretty terrible. Whether or not my partner Xed 5S, I would bid with the west hand.

Don't like the first pass of west
Don't like the 2nd pass of west
That's 2-0
I forced myself to read on
Don't like the 3rd pass of west, although it's not as aweful as the previous actions
Don't like the 4th pass of west
That makes 3.5-0
I blame west ;)

East's third bid should be 4NT, not 5. That might have made it even easier for West to bid 6.

So blame to both.

BTW if West had bid 5 over 4, maybe East would have found the lead of a small diamond against 5. But I suppose East bids 6 if West bids 5.

I think West decided a priori that he has a "weak hand" and failed to listen to the auction at any round. I think East bid perfectly, or at least perfectly understandably.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Yeah... that's what I was thinking when I saw dummy tabled. The other thought was oh crap... partner has length in the minors (after my AK was ruffed on rd 2)

Ah yes of course. 6 doesn't make either.

5X-1 is par. So well bid both :P

In what fantasy world does South make a takeout double, North bids only 2 on a hand that I would probably bid game, and South then carries on to game?

Meh I agree generally with this shape but east does have solid clubs so I think 5C is fine. If partner is weak and you start getting tapped playing in diamonds opposite 3-1 in the minors could be a disaster.

I realize you were being facetious, but since there's another thread about determining par...

EW can bid 6 making... so NS would sac in 6x-1 for par (same score as you said) ;)

I voted east, but I meant west, I just misread who was who.

West. It's the second pass I dislike; I'm OK with the first one.

Seriously tilt-inducing to get handed a zero by someone who bids the way South does.

I care about the friends I have made on BBO. Also, I am extremely concerned about the environment/ ecology/ wildlife/ the little planet that we call Earth. How much more of the world's habitat and food supply for animals do we plan on destroying. How many more wetlands are we going to drain, fill, and build on? How many more sand dunes are we going to knock down in the interests of high-rise hotels or luxury homes?

Don't agree with west's initial pass.
Am probably in the minority, but I tend to ignore opp's takeout doubles and make the bid (or its equivalent) that I was going to make if south had passed. Probably would have responded 1NT at this vul with 1 Dia a close 2nd and 1H a distant 3rd choice (I tend to not bid poor 4-card heart suits in this situation.). At least partner will know that I have a little something, and 1NT does have some pre-emptive potential should the hands be a little more normal. I prefer to say my piece asap as opposed to having to giving opps more room. If you play 1NT as showing a better hand, then I would respond 1D (at least I'm bidding something that I might like partner to lead if defending.).
