On the record for 1N, but I'm closer to 1♠...1N...2♠ than 1♠...1N...2N.

I'd open this 1♠ and worry about my rebid later. Who knows, maybe partner has spade support or maybe the opponents interfere so I may not need to face a rebid opposite an uncontested 1NT. If that scenario does indeed come, I think I will rebid 2♣.

1♠ and 2♣ rebid here too, not happy to upgrade this to a 2N rebid over 1N. Still have a few descriptive options left after partner responds to 2♣.

1S then 2S if not using 2C or 2NT as a gadget seems fine, and not ready to revise our whole rebid structure to add 2C and 2NT as gadgets. Will miss some 25 or 26 point games, and that might be a good thing.

We're too good to open 1♠ and rebid 2♠ vul at IMPS. 1♠ and raise 1NT to 2NT is clearly inferior to opening 1NT because it's off on both shape and values while the 1NT opening is only off on shape. 1♠ and rebid 3♠ is the beginner bid but we're not in that forum. So of the listed choices, only a 1NT opening appeals. I would happily rebid a three card minor with this type but sadly don't have one. On a scale of 1 to 10, how insane is it to want to rebid 2♥ on this?
I agree. Ely Culbertson's Principle of Preparedness accords with a 1N opener.

I quite like a 1NT opening on this. I don't think it is good enough for Gazilli or for 1s 1NT 2NT
If I opened 1S I would rebid 2S
If I opened 1S I would rebid 2S

Hi,
1S, followed by 3S.
I dont love it, the alternative would be to bid 2S instead of 3S,
ask me tommorow, and I may have changed my mind.
As it is, I dont like to open 1NT, or to rebid 2NT - I dont like
hiding my 6 card spade suit, I think the hand is also slightly too
weak for 2NT (and the suit could be better for a 3S bid).
With kind regards
Marlowe

I like the 1♠ + 2♣ plan. Now if it goes:
1♠ 1NT
2♣ ..??
2♦: bid 2♠
2♥: raise to 3 or 4
2♠: raise to 3
2NT: bid 3♠ if forcing, 3NT if not
3m: bid 3♠, then pass if pd bids 3NT
etc...
Seems like a good plan to me. Don't disagree with opening 1NT (has one flaw) but I don't really like 1♠ + 2NT. That has two flaws (not 'nuff hcp, too many spades).

I agree with Meckstroth.
I'd upgrade this to 1♠-1NT;2NT. At least that way I won't miss a 9-card fit.

... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Remembering Meck's preferred style, he already downgraded the hand by not opening 1C, so now he is not even upgrading when he rebids 2NT, and he must have 6 spades or 2NT is impossible. Some of us mere mortals are not ready to upgrade this hand to an 18'r.
