Someone suggested I took a look at wbridge5 which has won the world champship thrice, is free and runs under wine.
Well the user interaction is horrible (under wine, at least) so I am not going to use it, but having played a few boards I found it hard to believe that this software is a recent world champ. Completely bizarre bidding, like opening 3NT on a balanced 5-count. Or what do you think of this bidding:
2NT-p-3NT-p
p-6NT-x-.......
Any ideas about what is going on? Is it that it runs so slowly under wine that it has to set it level to sub-zero in order to meet some required speed? It is hard to imagine a software design that would allow an installation problem to cause it to mix up the pass card with the 6NT card or something like that, but who knows .....

The world would be such a happy place, if only everyone played Acol :) --- TramTicket

It seemed a bit weird to me when I downloaded it a while back. Jack was better behaved, not that I bothered to actually buy the full copy of that either.

Maybe you should contact the vendor, they might know of compatibility problems with WINE. It seems unlikely that it behaves like this in typical configurations.

I was pretty sure to have read somewhere that the freely downloadable version was not the same that the one which won the world championships, ut I can't find this info anymore...
