X is a reopening, not surprisingly he is short in spade and does not
want to let them play on the 2 level.
As it is, he choose to pass to give you the option to convert, if he had
no interest what soever to play 2Sx, e.g. with a shapely 5413 hand,
and without a lot of outside defence,, he should have bid 2NT.
