when my computers died, i removed their heart (hard drive). Where they had an after-life, they were installed in the new computer.
we were told to keep the drives to secure sensitive number stored in them-- bank and credit numbers, etc...
is it ok to bury them in the backyard? (we do use well water)
thanks

Using a screwdriver open up the chassis of the hard drive. There is a "disc" in there that looks much like a CD. Pry as much of it out with a screwdriver as you can and smash the hell out of it. Now you can discard it in the trash and save yourself some digging (I hate digging). If you are really paranoid you can discard different pieces of it in different locations.

Greg's method is indeed best, an extra sweep with a magnet may help as well.

I'd like to point out that the heart is not the hard drive but the processor. The hard drive is more like the brain...
