Been toying with a 3 way multi 2D for use in precision.
This would be along the lines:-

1. Weak 2 in major 5-10HCP.
2. 22-24 balanced
3. 16+ 4441

Have searched various sites and publications but can find no published treatments of this type of opening.

Any ideas anyone?

I don't see how including option 3 could be playable. How do you avoid getting way too high when partner has nothing much?

Hi:

It has been done with a strong 4441 before.

Black Club or an earlier version by Bob Hammon maybe? You might also try Power Precision?

Blue Team club used a strong 2D 4441 opening that should keep you from getting too high after a 2D opening.

Have you read Rigal, Precision in the 90s? It has a free copy on the net.
It uses transfers after 1C-1D and a 2D* rebid shows 4441 strong.

Regards,
Robert

But with the other options included in the 2 opening, you could not play 2//NT with the 4441 hand unless opponents help. So you would be effectively be starting at 3 on a hand with a few as 16 HCP and no long suit. In some cases you would even have to go to the four level to play in your best fit when responder has nothing. You'll be worse off than if you had just opened 1 and rebid a four card major or 1NT with a singleton.

This was the old version of the Multi. Most people have abandoned this, because as Nigel says, inlcuding the 4441 hands did not work all that well.

As I recall, Preempts from A-Z has a description of a similar treatment. (As Ron mentioned, multi 2 that included

a weak 2 in either major OR
a very strong NT oriented hand OR
a strong Roman 2 opening

were once fairly popular.

However, the range of the 4441 hand type was 21-24 or some such.

My understanding is that the frequency of the strong hand types is sufficiently small that people abandoned this variant.

in my club in Cluj there was a big following to

weak 2 in a major
4414 11-15 (I don't think they included (43)15 or 4405)
20-21 balanced (I don't remember the exact range)
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

Look at the inquiry system for ideas on how to incorporate these 4441's.
and the result can be plotted on a graph.

In Power Precision 2 has 3 meanings: 1)Weak 2 in OR 2)4-4-4-1 16-24 OR 3) 26-27 balanced. This scheme works well .It is difficult to bid 4-4-4-1 strong hands wihout a gadget.

This was quite common use of multi 2D in England in 1980s, although the ranges of the options were slightly different.

Rebids were: 2D-2H-2NT = balanced, 2D-2H-3suit = 4441 suit below singleton.

Responder's rebids following 2NT were as for 2NT opening.
Responder's rebids following 4441 were range relays, RKCB, spiral scan and 4D end signal.

Rebids showing 4441 were more awkward if the response was 2S or 3H, and if the opponents managed to compete, distinguishing the various options was even more awkward.

It could work if you lowered the opening bid to 1NT!
eg
1NT 2 asks
2 =4441 (after which 2/2/3 are p/c; 2NT is asking)
2 =
2=
2NT = 22-24 balanced

But this is probably not allowed by the authorities!
