The purpose of my bid was to allow my partner to clarify the nature of his hand (as I mentioned, I considered it to be a mark time bid).

If partner is 4522 then what is the nature of his hand? 4513? 4504?

I find it interesting that the various ideas floated in this thread don't really solve the problem on this hand.

The problem on this hand is easy to solve. Your partner should have opened 1! Look what you have and there is still no slam opposite that 2 opener.

Diabolical?

Kokish sucks with spades and hearts. There may be a cure to the nature-of-the-hand controversy. Bid 3NT. See what partner does based on his assessment of the nature of his hand.

That said, if I was forced to play a method that required me to have a way top show a club suit or show a diamond suit or to have a means of partner describing the nature of his hand, then:

4 = hearts
4 = spades
4 = what is the nature of your hand?
4 = clubs
4NT = diamonds
5 = what is the nature of your hand, am I have the bomb
5 = bigger diamonds
5 = RKCB for diamonds
5 = what-is-the-nature-of-your-hand grand slam force
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."
