During the 2001 recession, the ratio of jobless people to openings was little more than double; in early 2009, job seekers outnumbered jobs four-to-one.

According to a front page Sunday NYT has article, that ratio has now hit an all time record:

“Job seekers now outnumber openings six to one, the worst ratio since the government began tracking open positions in 2000.

Don't laugh.

I have a friend who was a sales manager at a hotel who made $120K last year. He was laid off because of the economy. Mind you, 2008 was pretty awful, and this was before the system melted down in October.

He got hired in the identical position by another hotel for $60K "just to get by". The same hotel closed another branch about 5 miles away and they hired the sales manager from the closed site. So he lost his job and they hired back this other person. For 36K.

My wife hires for a chain of speech therapy clinics. It is typical for her to get over 200 resumes for anything paying more than minimum wage.

Mid to high level real estate positions that advertise can frequently get THOUSANDS of applications.

It wasn't that long ago that I would get headhunters begging me to go to interviews, just to see how we'd get along.

The other annoying thing is where is all the stimulus money going? All I hear about is how school districts and local governments are using it to plug holes in their budgets.

Is this the new "trickle down" economics?
