I got this survey too... I honestly answered I would like to see sectional and more tourneys on line. I added in the other comments I would like to see club championships on line.
Anyone who gets this survey should take it... I guess it is about 3 to 5 minutes to fill out.

I told them I thought they were generally doing a great job.
I told them that I wouldn't support online tournaments of any real importance because it was just too easy to cheat.
I also expressed disappointment at hard it was to figure out which conventions were legal and which weren't.

I got the survey e-mail also, but I thought it was a phishing e-mail because there was no ACBL logo anywhere; it was generic in its signature with no name; ACBL has a "Marketing Department", not a "Marketing Team". And finally, there is no mention of this *seventh annual membership survey* [according to the email text] on the ACBL website.
You folks seem to think it is a legitimate ACBL survey. I just didn't want to click on some strange zoomerang.com/survey link given that there was no ACBL identifying information in the invite.

But in other comments, I added that I want to see finals of major championships played via computer, each player at their computers with proctors/audiences, all 8 players seperated, 1 in each hotel room.
0 cheating that way.

I also asked for real time updates to online events at all tables on the ACBL webpage. I will not hold my breath for that one.

Great idea. thanks.
btw we all know the problems of online tourneys and cheats.....
My take; go for it.....
1) spur more money, time, energy to stop them....
2) I grant true cheats will always be one step ahead..but I can live with that.....

Cheating is a problem but I don't really think it happens much in the speedball games. Then again maybe I am just naive.

Could such events undermine the efforts of sectional and regional tournament organizers and have a negative effect on attendance at "in person" tournaments? Sure. But, would I care if there were no side-game series at a regional? Not at all.
I would not mind if regionals in general were smaller tournaments focused more on Flight A/Open events. If the availability of online sectional and regional tournaments causes this to be the case, that's a beneficial side effect as far as I am concerned.

I am in favor of having higher level events than the usual ACBL games on BBO. But security is certainly a problem.
I played in the World Pairs competition on the old E-bridge. When we got to the finals, we were required to have a proctor at each participant's computer. My partner and I were the first alternate pair for the last World Pairs played on e-bridge, and we only played one round (one pair showed up late, so we were excused after one round). I was playing at a local bridge club with the TD serving as the proctor. His job was to make sure that I had no assistance in the tournament, whether by someone in person or by any electronic means of communication.
In a large tournament, that would be highly impractical. However, unusual results can be monitored, and if it is determined that a pair is cheating, steps can be taken - just as is done in live tournaments. It would be done after the fact, but given that the sanctions would probably involve a lifetime ban from all bridge organizations, it would serve as a deterrant.
