I'm toying with the idea of passing. Partner holds a lot of HCP's but also too many hearts. 2NT could be passed. If this weren't the case (or if we weren't red) I'd bid 2NT at ease.

2NT, and if partner were to bid 4 of a minor I would bid game.

Why does partner have a lot of hearts? Partner could have 4 hearts, 3.

And 2NT shows the minors. If partner decides to pass 2NT and it turns out we have the minors, why would that be bad?

We have some defense against 4♥, plus pard may have a couple hearts. So there's little risk to push them into a making game and we should compete with 2NT.

I think it is clear, but I would be more worried of getting caught for 500 in 3m, than of missing a 5m game.

Yes you might go for 500 but it isn't that likely I think. We are not bidding 2NT to get to game by the way, we are fighting for the partscore. At least I am.

What is really intriguing me is why partner never doubled? and why openers partner only bid 2♥? It would not surprise me to see partner with opening points and 4522 or similar and our only chance of a + score lying with a pass. But that is just one pessimistic line of many better possible outcomes, with the added benefit that the opposition could save our bacon by bidding 3♥.

If you bid 2NT the best I can see realistically coming out of this is playing in 3 of a minor or defending 3♥, which looks good enough for me as I don't see us getting into a load of trouble.

The one thing that does concern me is playing in 4 of a minor, but the only way I can see that happening is if partner has no defence to 3♥, in which case 4 of a minor would be perfectly good.
bridge is never always a game of exact, for those times it's all about percentages, partner and the opponents.
