Did North or South bid poorly , or that is just "bad luck" hand?

3♦ was rather feeble. I'd have bid 4♦. With the South hand, I'd raise that preemptively to five. That would have been a lucky result.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

I had used Andys approach, but had not complaint about reaching + 150 with the given bidding.

Bad luck. 7-4's cool, but no diamond spots and 4card suit in opps suit - I don't particularly like 4D. If I bid 4D, I don't think it's that clear to raise it to 5.

I might have tried 3NT with South's hand. 5♦ would not have crossed my mind..

I don't mind +150, because I don't think that 3♦ was unreasonable, nor was South's pass, and I'm pretty sure I would have replicated the auction at the table. I suppose 4♦ with the North hand isn't bad, but it's certainly a bit ambitious. Maybe a raise to 4♦ from south was in order, but once again, I think it's definitely resulting...

I guess I'm the only one who bids 2♦ with the N hand. Not only will my chances of getting sawed off decrease dramatically, but my hand is actually pretty good.
Now I don't know how it should go. But I wouldn't reach 5♦ and I might reach 3N.

Opposite a passed hand, 3♦ is perfectly reasonable with the North hand.
I would be more concerned about trying to get in the way of my opponents auction than looking for an 11 trick game opposite a passed hand.
Quite frankly, the opps have play for 4♠.

Hi,
Responder has 2-2,5 tricks for partner (most of the time).
To answer your question, one would need to know,
how high the variance of the 3D bid is.
Is the given hand a typical example, for most this would
be a super max? Would you also bid 3D with a 6 carder?
Depending on the answers:
If the expectation for an 3D bid is -2, you will have a resonable
chance of making 3D.
If the expectation for an 3D bid is -1, you will have a resonable
chance of making 5D 50% of the time.
With kind regards
Marlowe
PS: We would have bid similar, but in 2nd seat we would have bid
4D instead of 3D.
