1 negative X coming up (can't be penalty unless we play with 15 cards)

Okay, so I play neg doubles here.

Why on earth do I want to play 3 in a minor?

I take my 7 tricks on defence, undoubled.
Kind Regards

Roland

I hesitate and then pass, so that partner can know to reopen with a double. :P

I pass and take my push or small gain, no need to go for it on every hand when I don't have the right holding for it.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I think the greater concern, IMO, is not just between trying for 9 tricks in a red contract or taking a marginal set against 2. This hand is looking really nice for a possible 3NT contract.

I mean, every single suit has exactly what I would want for a marginal 3NT contract. I don't just have Qx in spades -- I have the 10 also, assuredly a complete double stop. I have J10xx in two red suit, each of which is well-positioned for finesses that will succeed much more often than not. I have the K10x in clubs, which adds to the chances of clubs providing a trick source as well.

The problem is that 3NT from my side is probably unstoppable but that ship has sailed. Partner cannot know, however, that K9x or A9x is HUGE and that A8x or K8x might be powerful as well.

Not sure on this one. I might just take the plunge and bid 3NT. I don't care about missing a heart fit, as 3NT is probably the most likely game even if we have a heart fit.

Passing is probably the wise choice, but I'm not always wise.

And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

Same here. Looks like a sensible path to a plus score.

I think a lot of the layouts Ken is hoping for in 3N will have a glaring deficiency with the opponents having five cashers, or a surprise trick source in clubs, or too many cards to knock out once our double or triple spade stop is released. To be fair, if LHO opened 1 or 1 and RHO passed, I would feel much more emboldened here.

I'm passing and hoping for a plus score.
Kind regards,
