Playing in an ACBL IMP pair game on BBO, you pick up in fourth seat:

Scoring: XIMP

(1) - P - (2) - ?

Clearly, if RHO had opened 1, your 3 overcall would have asked partner to bid 3NT with a spade stop.

Does the cue bid in 4th seat mean the same thing when LHO opens 1 and RHO raises to 2? If not, what does the cue bid mean?

[This hand turned out to be just "grand." I will give the details after I get some responses.]

I'd expect Michaels, but it would be something of a guess on my part.

I would shoot 5 in teams play... possibly 3 in duplicate

Ops have shown a minimum of 18-19hcp....you have 16hcp... pd at most can have 5-6hcp...so only one Ace to be found..

Your hand is a four loser hand...so you expect probably to go down one...

I would assume a good michaels bid, given that we are red.

Yes, it could be used as 'bid 3N with a stopper', but I doubt that many would assume that meaning absent agreement. I also think, on frequency grounds, that the michaels meaning would arise more frequently... but I can't be certain... finally, bidding 3 will sometimes get you to 3N when the bid 3N with a stopper would work, while you are toast on the 5-5 hands if you can't use michaels.

BTW, I would bid only 3 here... bidding 4 excludes 3N and leaves you guessing next round... 3 may well not solve all of your problems but I would expect that we will be less likely to have a major problem next round if we start slowly.

I would play it as whatever I play the direct cuebid of a weak 2 bid.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Stopper ask for me, as over a weak two.

Leaping Michales is on.
Kind regards,

My partner could not figure out what my 3 bid meant. Fortunately, the opponents came to the rescue. My LHO doubled 3, so my partner, holding

AQxx
K
xxxx
xxxx

decided to await developments. He passed, and I pulled to 4. My partner raised to 5 which was passed around to my LHO who, after some thought, doubled. My partner REDOUBLED, and we played it there.

Fortunately, LHO had the AK of clubs and there was no ruff, so 5xx scored for +1000 - a "grand" ending.

Ditto, including the responses if we double.

It's easier to remember too.

I think you mean "matchpoints". Team play is duplicate.

Me too.

Which is what I play over a weak two in spades as JDonn said.

Agree with Harald. Not playing NLM, 3 is probably Michaels.
