You are dealt this hand, red on white, against a LHO who's very competent, and a RHO who's shaky, in 4th chair:

(1D) 1H (3D)* (preemptive)

KQJTxxx Qxx x Qx

After you elect to raise to 3 due to your pard's aggressive tendencies, 4 to LHO, double by pard.

What is double?

Abstain.

Me too. I would have bid 3 and now I would have the chance to bid 4.

3 in the p'ship, is unconditionally forcing, in the p'ship.

I agree about the bidding 3 pard FWIW.

I think I would have bid 4 instead of 3. As to what this double means:

1-1-3-3
4-DBL

I think it is the dreaded balance of power double, suggesting that we either defend 4X or play 4 depending upon the nature of advancer's raise. 3 has to cover a sort of wide range because of the crammed auction.

If part two is what to do when this double is passed back to us, then it might be time to abstain.

Partner's double is for penalties.

If 3 is forcing, I'd bid 4 over 3. Maybe that's the right bid anyway.
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

This sort of hand bids spades and buries the hearts. After 4 doubled I'll pull to 4... .

I agree. I wouldn't bid spades then hearts like the others, I would only be bidding spades. I guess the only exception is if partner rebids hearts after my first spade bid then I'll leave it at that.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Surely a direct 4 over 3. The auction is jammed and we have to guess. It's clear to insist on spades with this hand, and if partner doesn't have the values to make 4, it's just too bad.

In the actual sequence, partner's double of 4 is for penalties.
