Scoring: XIMP

WEST     NORTH     EAST     SOUTH
                                             P
1          1             2         2
P            P              2NT        3
3NT        P               ?

Any possibility to take evasive action ? What would be your bid please?
Thanks.

Evasive action? What are you talking about? I've described my hand, and partner bid 3NT to play. What am I supposed to be afraid of?

A reasonable hand for partner might be QJx Kxx Axxxx Ax.

Presumably 2NT was "unusual", showing secondary diamonds with values to bid to the 3 level.

2NT is almost as absurd as the idea of substitute definite articles in English. Anyway, yes, pass now, 4 when they double us, buy a beer for partner and tell him
"I cant promise this is the last time, but I'll try" after we lose 12 imps.
... and I can prove it with my usual, flawless logic.

I think it's quite sensible to play 2NT as both minors here. Without that agreement, East's hand is rather hard to bid. I bet this meaning comes up a lot more often than a balanced 11-count with a spade stop.

That doesn't mean it was right to do this without discussion opposite Nickell. Still, it's a bit surprising that he bid 3NT. Isn't he usually quite conservative?
... that would still not be conclusive proof, before someone wants to explain that to me as well as if I was a 5 year-old. - gwnn

Gnasher, I don't think it's all that sensible when you can just reopen with a double (when you're 35, and sometimes when you're 36), or with 3D (when you are 45, and presumably a forcing hand otherwise you shouldn't start with 2C).

Sure, on this specific hand 2N for the minors would be nice, but I think it's very desirable to be able to bid 2N with a spade stopper and still be able to get out below game. I think it's clear to just reopen with 3C and hope for the best.

Of course thinking that 2N minors here is a standard bid is LOL.
