But, much to Claus' disappointment I'm sure, I think my original question is largely moot. We have one pair in Scotland playing a BSC (that is legal in Scotland and England at all events anyhow) and the number of BSCs elsewhere are declining at a rapid rate.

Paul helps to train the team, so they must know his theory about HUMs; in such circumstances, it should not come as a shock if aspiring partnerships tend to espouse orthodox methods.

BSCs are declining everywhere. I believe because there is nowhere for most players to experiment except in the major international championships and, occasionally, in their national trials.

I guess you are speaking in a british context, because BSC's are growing in use in Australia.

A European context.

Good luck, Australia! You deserve it!

IMO: any country with hopes of International success, should consider implementing an Anything Goes policy at all levels, for most competitions. Hoi Polloi would not object but, instead, welcome an unusally short simple regulation. The variety of experience would stretch players' minds and prepare them for strange foreign methods. If some HUMs are as advantageous, technically, as their advocates believe, then their users might even emulate the success of C C Wei's 1969 Chinese Precision team.

In international competition, initially, BSC users would benefit from their unfamiliarity. Sensible legislators from other countries would read and heed the writing on the wall and gradually liberalise their policies. Eventually, this would save rain-forests of incomprehensible convention-restriction regulations.

Soon, natural selection would ensure that any highly unusual method, you encountered, would also be grossly inferior.

Happy Christmas, BBOers!

You are right Nigel. The funny thing is as has been posted many times, is that many lols use BSCs with nary a second thought. They certainly would not call the director on you for using one either. It depends on what you are used to I guess.
