Automatic if I were in second seat, and I would still bid 3S here.

Sure, we could easily go for a number, but it is also reasonably likely that there is a double game swing (or that we can make 4S, or that they can make 4H, or that 3S is the par spot....).
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I expect that partner will raise me to game with any non-minimum and 3-card support, and probably maximum pass with Hx. I don't relish either of those dummies.

I'd at least like to have a better ♠ suit, like KJTxx.

With 5-5, I don't see how you cannot bid 3♠. It takes so little to produce a game that it is worth the risk that you might go for a number.

As han said, the chances that there will be a double game swing on this hand are quite high.

A better question might be this: If the auction went 3♥ - P - 4♥ to you, do you bid 4♠? I would.
