Definitely not opposite a passed partner, and probably not even if I were in second seat.

Automatic if I were in second seat, and I would still bid 3S here.

Sure, we could easily go for a number, but it is also reasonably likely that there is a double game swing (or that we can make 4S, or that they can make 4H, or that 3S is the par spot....).
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

I expect that partner will raise me to game with any non-minimum and 3-card support, and probably maximum pass with Hx. I don't relish either of those dummies.

I'd at least like to have a better suit, like KJTxx.

With 5-5, I don't see how you cannot bid 3. It takes so little to produce a game that it is worth the risk that you might go for a number.

As han said, the chances that there will be a double game swing on this hand are quite high.

A better question might be this: If the auction went 3 - P - 4 to you, do you bid 4? I would.

3, I am not risking a double game swing when I can enter at the 3-level.

Not scary to me at all, easy 3S. Passing is just terrible imo.

3, can't imagine passing.
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

You have to bid 3S with this, even if partner is a passed hand.

3. Bread and butter, we must get the spade suit in. I could imagine much scarier things than this 3 bid.

lol, I wouldn't use the word "risky" to describe a 5C bid there.
