Scoring: IMP

1 x 4 4
5 p p 5
x p ?

IMPS, SAYC pickup, no agreements on high level bids
My first 4 might be bad, but now I face the decision to stand partners penalty x or bid on?

Easy pass. You are in imps, partner didnt double because he wanted 100 instead of 50.

Either hes expecting -2 (playing you for 1 trick and having 3 sure trick in his hand)
Or hes X to stop you from bidding 6H.

I would have bid 5H on the first turn because the chance of buying the hand at 4H are so slim.
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

X means he doesn't want you to bid on, and you have no good reason to, so just pass.

6 has so many ways to win a bunch of IMP's instead of passing a cheap save

100% agree with the 4H bid and now I pass.

Partner's probably doubling on a diamond trick or two, and he's going to be very surprised when the 5 bidder doesn't have any diamonds!

Wouldn't you double on

xxx
AKxxx
AKx
Ax

?

That would make 7 without a diamond lead, but the opponents make 5 if the doubler is 4-1-4-4.

This is too much of a freak for me. I'm bidding on.

At matchpoints this is much harder - 6 probably won't make and 5 probably won't make either. You just can't take this chance at IMPs though, especially at all white, where if you go down 1 doubled instead of setting them 1 doubled it's only lose 5. Give partner some hand like Qx AKQxxx x AQxx and both 5 and 6 are cold. This isn't even giving partner a fit in diamonds - if he has that, then both sides could be cold for 6-level bids. On a side note, you should bid at least 5 the first time - now if partner doubles he knows you have a real freak and you can sit.

This is just too little defence and too much distribution for me to pass the X, inspite of hating to pull PD's 5 level doubles.

Partner needs THREE defensive tricks in his own hand to set. Looking at my hand, that would most likely be in the form of trump trick and two club tricks.
However: Partner's Kxx may be finessable, we may have no diamond tricks, and for partner to have AK clubs is not likely enough for me to pass.

In any case, the risk of a double game swing is too much. I bid 6. You may also be cold for slam (even grand). They may also bid 6 over 6.

If the saying goes six-five come alive, what's six-six?

6-6 is not a good reason?

I mean wow I would never consider passing this.

I would have bid 5 the first time, something I think I do a lot less often than most of you people. But in this situation there is no WAY!!!! that I'm passing now.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

Good question.
Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.
