Is this a trick question?

(After the edit) OK, probably I still open 1, but 1NT is also reasonable.

That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

Am I supposed to be tempted to open 1N with a 4333 14 count with two jacks?

1 for me.

1 totally obv.

I am all for tactical NT bids, but this doesn't qualify. I am not unhappy at all if the opponents declare (especially when they are red), and my hand sucks.

It also has three aces and two 109s. I'd probably upgrade this.

Obvious 1.

But, I play 14-16 in this seat and would open 1NT myself. I like the lower range here.

This would be my least favorite seat to upgrade this hand. The risk of it leading to a minus by partner overbidding is too high.
Please let me know about any questions or interest or bug reports about GIB.

I'd try a 15-17 1N with it. If you concede that Aces are undervalued and tens and nines are of some limited use even though they count for nothing, then just how many do you have to add before upgrading. I think this one qualifies - just.

Just a thought from the peanut gallery: I think that if one of the red tens was a black instead it might be more worthy of an upgrade, say AJ10 942 A1097 AJ6 - same pips, same distribution. I would open that hand 1NT under the given conditions, but I don't think the OP hand is worth 1NT.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy - but it might improve my bridge.

IMO 1 = 10, 1N = 9.
You have no 4 card major; the aces tens and nines are good; but the shape is dull.

I don't feel strongly between 1 and 1, but 1NT is a gross misevaluation of this hand.

Definitely not 1NT for me, not even close with 4333.

I agree with nearly all of this post, just remove the word "gross".
