I can remember the honors but you hold 5602
partner opens
1♦ : 1♥
3♦ : 3♠
5♦ :
partner had 1273
We should have been in 4♥, my pard said I should bid 3♥ to show 6, not 3♠. I think my pard should bid 4♦, we are in gf auction already.

5♦ was an inconsiderate bid.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

5=6 in the majors can become very awkward when you cannot get to show your distribution below 3NT.
Partner's jump to 3♦ took away sufficient bidding space to make it awkward this time. That doesn't make 3♦ wrong - I haven't seen the hands so for now I assume it is normal.
The problem is 3♠ could be made on a four-card or even shorter suit just searching for 3NT or a heart preference. Perhaps if partner bids 3NT or 4♦ over 3♠ then 4♥ should show that the spades were for real otherwise we could just have bid a natural and forcing 3♥ on the previous round. However I am not sure that this is at all standard or even close to standard.

I agree, Katherine, you're 3♠ is GF so PD's 5♦ is poor. For all PD's knows, you are probing for slam and his 5♦ takes up very needed bidding space.
I could not bid 5♦ with any cards PD could possibly hold. If he has to rebid ♦ and he often does, he should rebid 4♦.

I think 1m/3m causes a lot of problems and confusion with less experienced players and is often used with unsuitable hands. Heck, look at my last 2 hands.

Partner should bid 4D over 3S and then you can bid 4H which he will pass

Hi,
As always, it depends.
Contrairy to the majority, whatever this may be worth,
I would say, that 5D may be your partners best bid.
You are certainly in a gf situation, but some play that
you can stop in 4m, if 3NT is no option at all, so if he
fears 4D getting passed out 5D may not be a terrible
bid at all.
And than there is the alternative option, that 4D may
sound stronger than 5D, setting trumps and generating
a slam auction, and maybe he already did stretch to bid
3D. And if 4D sets trumps, 4H does not show a 6th heart,
it does not even show interest in another game, it is simply
a cue.
With kind regards
Marlowe

4 posts and I'm convinced of 2 things, jillybean:
1 - your partner results like it's 1999.
2 - you're an excellent player who knows what you're doing.
This is an instructive hand. After ♠, ♥ and ♦ could all be right.

Still decidedly intermediate - don't take my guesses as authoritative.
