X, followed by bidding spades.
Thats the way how you bid a non forcing 1-suiter,
if you decided to play that a new suit at the 2-level
is forcing.

I agree that bidding 2♠ is a dirty job. But you're wrong when you say someone's gotta do it.
A negative double is better by far IMO, as 2♠ clearly overstates your values (unless you play it as NF).
The worst thing that might happen (not often) after a X is partner jumping to 4♥. He'll be unbalanced then though, and you can revert to 5♦.
