This one I'd open 1H. The reason I deviate from my normal pattern with 5-6's (opening the 6) with this hand is that since the suits are hearts and diamonds, hearts is likely to get lost if I open 1D when my hand is this weak. Usually you can just stretch to reverse with 5-6 but I think this is too far, and if the auction gets competitive you're pretty much forced to pass which sucks.

I'd open this one 1. If I cannot reverse (and I agree that even with the 5-6 this is too light), then I'm not going to let s get shut out. I have been opening these hands (systemically) 1 for awhile and don't feel anything horrible has happened yet.

This was the actual action, my partner misunderstood the 2 cue and was happy to play in 5. :)
After 5 (X) I was left with a gamble at 5 or 6's is it possible to recover sensibly from here?

You made a slam try (4C) partner signed off, then you make another slam try (5D). Partner still doesn't bid slam so I would sign off in 5H.

What should 5 (X) pass mean? As it was my partner didnt know about the fit.

To me your 5D bid shows that you have club and diamond controls but denies a spade control as you have bypassed spades twice. So far so good. We can actually figure out what partner has:

Partner would sign off in 5H without a spade control, so pass at least shows a spade control. On the other hand, you have made two slam tries and partner still hasn't committed to slam so partner is clearly not enthousiastic. I think that redouble would show a good diamond control and would also show more slam interest than pass.

Of course I understand that partner misunderstood the auction, hopefully next time he or she will remember that (1) a cuebid by responder shows support and (2) 1H-2H shows 5+ spades (and another suit) so 2S is logically a cuebid.

Was this hand really worth a 5 call? It's not hard to construct a hand for opener where 4 is the limit of the hand. You made a slam try, partner has an ill-fitting minimum, game over, yes? Partner's club void was a very nice surprise, but he could have been 3523 for the auction so far, in which case you aren't even making 4.

I think my hand is worth another slam try, my partner could have passed or bid 4 over the opps (2nt) - I would have signed off 4 here.

3 is an advanced cue, I havent finished bidding this 6403 hand yet.

3D is natural, patterning out. You can be pretty sure from the auction that they have a club fit and partner has short clubs.
