Opening bid

This hand came up in the semi-finals of a knockout today, board 2/12, first board 3N+1 your way, should be flat.

Scoring: IMP

Does anyone open this 1N? I can see some definite advantages to that bid over 1♦, but I am curious to hear your thoughts.

I'd open this 1N (and call this a maximum) and have no serious opposition to 1♦.

I'd open it 1NT for several reasons.
1) Our structure for getting to the right game is better over 1NT than 1 diamond,
2) I'm not worried as much about missing a minor suit slam because partner is a passed hand,
3) it makes it more risky for the opponents to compete, and
4) it protects our kings on opening lead.

1D.

I dont open off shape NT, so I am certainly
biased.

1 NT is ok, and if you have agreed to do it,
than the hand is certainly a candidate,
although I would prefer stronger side suits.

The first important aspect is, what system
do you play over 1NT, some systems allow
offshape NT openings over dont.

If you believe the hand to weak to make a
3D jump rebid, open 1 NT, my plan would be
1D - 3D.

1NT in any position.
I hugely like 1NT with a suitable hand with a 6-card minor. Nearly as much as I hate it with an unsuitable hand with a 5-card major.

cause that typically shows 10-14 or some such (minimumish opener with many nice diamonds), this hand is not all that much about diamonds and is not really minimumish.

Agree with 1NT in 4th chair. Would open 1♦ in 1st/2nd because of possible slam prospects in diamonds, which will be hard to figure after a 1NT opening. Obviously opposite a passed hand slam is remote.
