Scoring: IMP

2 on your right, passed round to partner who doubles. Pard is an England international who you've only played with once before, you agreed Leb during a brief system discussion.

Yeah, I would pass this.
Not sure if I'd go for ruffs or a forcing defence (K lead).
Kind regards,
Harald

I bid 3 (showing values)

I think this is close, perhaps pass is better.
Pass will get a range of scores from +800 (or more) to -670 (or more)
:P
That's impossible. No one can give more than one hundred percent. By definition that is the most anyone can give.

3. AT-5th is probably my minimum for converting here. I understand Harald's desire for a tap, but we don't have a great tap suit and its not clear we'll have tricks to cash after the tap.

I have had bitter experience in trying for penalties with this sort of hand.

Convert for penalties must be clearly best guess, as it is so unilateral.
Here 4H isn't even unlikely. Besides may get higher bonanza vs foolish competing.

3 for me. I like to penalty pass slightly more than average, but I won't do it without the spots. My experiences from trying this are pretty bad. Too often, we set them 1 when we have a cold 4 (even 6), or we don't set them at all.

If you forced me to defend, I would probably belt out the K to take a look and decide from there. It seems very probable that trying for club ruffs is the best defense, depending on how weak dummy is.

I don't like playing for penalties at all unless RHO is a maniac.

Where is my 9 of S ?
From Psych "I mean, Gus and I never see eye-to-eye on work stuff.
For instance, he doesn't like being used as a human shield when we're being shot at.
I happen to think it's a very noble way to meet one's maker, especially for a guy like him.
Bottom line is we never let that difference of opinion interfere with anything."

3 seems nice here. Note that pard is very short on spades, so he might be a tad light (in which case 2X+1 is quite possible!!!!).

This was from a county KO match against a strong team, my counterpart passed and collected 800 opposite x Axx AKxxx AKxx while I was in 4.

Early in a team match? Convert to penalties, hoping to score 500 v our partial.
Even 200 puts the fear of crackling in opponents hearts. That's appealing!

Hope partner has S10+, as this X is against S-KQJ109 and need S8 to score.
Adverse (double?) game swing seems too far afield; unlikely but loses match now.

Convert appeals, but it's 'all-in' on this one hand. I don't, but would be taken aback if opponents did and won 200/500.

I can't see myself passing. I have a fairly offensive hand much more suited to declaring that defending. You were unlucky.
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is.

Don't worry about it one hand proves nothing.

It gets worse than this 18 months or so ago my opponent with my cards sat for a double of 2 with Q632. The 2 bidder was not vulnerable and she was vulnerable. At the other table with those cards I explored for a fit and eventually ended in 3NT. 2 was down two and I had no play for 3NT with our combined 25 or 26 hcp. This was in a knockout match that we lost at the end of this set by 1 IMP.

Hi,

3H.

The main issue is not that you only
have Axxxx, but that you have fit for
partner, i.e. you may beat 2S, but
you may have slam your way.

With kind regards
Marlowe
