If no systems, I'm bidding 3 hearts, planning to "run" to 4 clubs. If I'm playing my favorite system, suction, I'm bidding 3NT to show either the pointed or round suits.

2NT or 4NT. 2NT is "two places to play" and does not promise minors. 4NT might should probably promise the same. 4NT is just a little too rich for me at these colors and with possible bad splits for them, so 2NT it is.

3NT has a certain appeal to it alright. Nobody, including p will have a clue what's going on. It's just as pre-emptive as 4♣ in the sense that if opener bids his suit anyway, he has been forced to guess at a high level and they may be in the wrong game or miss slam.
The difference between theory and practice is that in theory, there is no difference between theory and practice, but in practice, there is.

I like a 4♣ bid. This seems like a nice balance between safety and preemption. I think if you bid 5♣ they will just double you most of the time, and they will be right more often than not.
