If partner couldn't make a t/o double at the 1-level, he surely can't at the 4-level. This stinks, but it's not my party. Pass.

In old Terrence Reese books, he notes this auction as partner having a light takeout double and figuring on a good sacrifice, like - Jxxxx Kxxx Axxx. I know that may well be out of date now, but it's food for thought anyway.

I agree that's a faint possibility, but I'd not expect anyone to do that at equal vulnerability. At favourable that explanation would be more likely.

Partner's X is for penalty and shows a trump stack. That said, partner doesn't have that unless LHO has psyched. Partner may believe he's shown a hand with a spade void that couldn't make a t/o X. You have to evaluate what's going on but in most lineups I would bid 5D.

If you pass and partner has a distributional hand like this then he can still bid 4NT?

I doubled for take out once and it was my first and only -990 for this sequence, I hope I can stay calm for the rest of my life.

In all my regular partnerships I pass, because this is a penalty double.

There was a hand not dissimilar to this in the BW MSC a few years ago. The majority of the panellists bid, but this was a disaster, and 4S was going for a mountain as opener had indeed psyched.
