Just for fun...

(Only) using Pavicek's bridge hand calculator:

http://www.rpbridge.net/xhc1.htm

Try to find the bridge hand pattern (x for low card, H for honour) which has the highest odds of occuring.

Post your hand pattern here so that others can try and outbeat you ;)

Restriction: You are not allowed to use "?" which the bridge hand calculator allows.

Just a guess at the obvious, but how about: Hxxx Hxx Hxx Hxx

The restriction is too restrictive.

Let's make this more challenging (hopefully).

Part ii)
You are allowed to use "?", but not more than 6 of them.

So part i) is not using "?" and part ii is as above.

That's defaintly not it. 4432 is more likely than 4333

So I'm going to submit:

Hxxx Hxxx Hxx xx

Actually, a specific 4432 is less common than 4333. It's just that there are only four 4333 distributions and there are twelve 4432 distributions, so the chances that you are "some 4432" are a lot better than "some 4333."

I'd guess Hxxx H?? H?? H?? for most common with six ?s, given that you cannot combine ? with x in the same suit.

Well, if the order of the suits doesn't matter, that will be miles behind this:

HHxx Hxxx Hxx xx

which is apparently less common than this:

HHxx Hxxx Hxx Hx.

If the order of the suits is fixed, a 4333 might win.

I would guess that HHxx Hxxx Hxx xx in no specific order would be the most common hand pattern.

It looks like Hxxx and HHxx are equally likely so the best you can do is

Hxxx Hxx Hxx Hxx or HHxx Hxx Hxx Hxx

I think.

for part i) Hxxx Hxx Hxx Hxx seems to be winning.

for part ii) there has only been one response (but i think we can do better than that)

Hxxx Hxx ??? ??? seems to be the most common. I suppose the four-card suit can be replaced with HHxx.

I haven't investigated thoroughly but it seems a bit odd that Hxx seems to give the same result as H??
