I want to make sure that I understand the auction.

1. East was Dealer and opened 1.

2. The 5=3=0=5 hand in the Diagram is the South hand...

My suspicion is that most people would consider this hand suitable for an immediate 1 overcall of the 1 opening.
Those who don't overcall 1 probably have some kind of two suited overcall available.

If you decide to pass, then you need to take some action stronger than 3 when partner butts in to the auction.

I overcall 1.

If for some reason I had forgotten to overcall then on the second round I have to take some action. Passing with these cards when partner had come into the auction is a mistake that many beginner and intermediate players make.

Rather than passing it is almost always right to raise an overcall when you have support and more than about 6 hcp (and sometimes it is right to raise with even less).

As Richard says in fact this hand is probably too strong for a simple raise and so I would make a stronger raise. Either jump to 4 or cue-bid 3 - a cue-raise - showing invitational or better values with a heart fit. Having passed over 1 though I imagine that your partner may get the wrong picture of your hand.

South should bid 1S immediately. Agree with Cascade's and Richard's comments.
