I can't find the deal because the team match was aborted and I don't log all the hands I play. I don't remember all the spots but I do remember that they were rather pathetic. No agreements. Pick-up expert partner. I doubled because I had points and tolerance for the other 3 suits. My partner asked what the double was, and said I should have bid diamonds! When I responded that I did not have 5 she insisted that I was wrong. I would rather pass than bid 2♦. At the other table, West made 2NT xed. Should I have passed? What should have been my thought process after one spade.

Double shows 4+ hearts.

You should bid 1D or pass, either is fine. I would probably pass with a pickup partner, and bid 1D with a regular partner.

Opposite the double, I would have bid 2H rather than 1NT, though I tend to avoid raising on 3, AK4 is good support. 1NT is OK, though.

This hand had no nice bids for either one of you.

Why not? If partner reopens with a double (or anything else) you are that much gladder you haven't misdescribed your hand. If partner passes it out then he has either a piece of garbage or spade length, and in either case I see no problem with defending 1♠.

If I had to not pass and hated 2♦ that much, then 2♣ is a much more accurate description of my strength than 2♠. But that is neither here nor there as I have no problem passing when no bid is right.

Hi,

a matter of partnership agreement.
Some play that the neg. X can also
include a bal. 10-12 count.

The add. strength is compensation
enough for the missing heart.

So, at least for me, double is ok,
and I would not bid a forcing 2D,
because this bid will give me more
problem later on than I can handle.

And I would also not bid 1NT, this
promises a stopper, sometimes
partner raises to 3NT.

I don't mind pass but I am not that much gladder if partner doubles - I still have no bid to describe this hand.
My guess is all of pass, double, 1N and 2♣ would find support in a MSC poll.

I would probably bid 2♣. Pass and Dbl are fine as well except maybe that dbl requires the agreement that p must check if you really have four hearts before bidding 4♥. I don't care for 1NT and 2♦ but I'm sure some good players would prefer one of those, especially if p is known to open 1♣ with 4-4 m.

P's pass on your double is ridicolous of course. "Experts" who bid like that and then even give lessons to p on the basis of the same deal go immediately to my enemies list.
