Scoring: IMP

Opps silent.

1-1-?

Your bid? If anything above 3N, just check other and explain. I couldn't think of any plausible bids higher than 3N, so they are not included in the poll.

System is 2/1.

This is a rough one.

If the auction has started

1 - (1) - ??? then I am cue bidding 2. my only question is whether we are playing 6 or 7 and I want room to cue bid.

If I opened and partner responded 1, then I am going to rebid 2NT. I (slightly) prefer this to 3

It is completely unclear to me whether it is 1 by partner 1 overcall, or 1 by me 1 by partner. In the first case 2 in the second 2, and in both I think the bid is easy, obvious, and will lead to no problems at all.

Good point - I assumed 1S overcall.

Opps silent usually means the opponents haven't bid. B)

So it is 1C p 1S p ?

Yes now I see B) I think it's easier to just put the passes in the auction as proven by me not being the only one fooled, but mea culpa.

I think for an experienced player there is not even a logical alternative to 2. If partner raises he must have 5 spades and you can bid 3, if he does anything else you usually bid 3 next anyway and are very well placed. Nothing else even comes close.

2H

The current concept, in this position, you are not showing 4+ suit. It's a bit like transfers, once you think about it, it becomes standard.

Well this isn't right. It does show four hearts. If partner tries to raise them, you will bid spades and partner should understand what's going on. I wouldn't make this bid opposite someone who is just going to keep putting me back in hearts if he has 4 no matter what.

Would you play transfers with someone who didn't understand them?

It's no use saying 'it shows four but then it doesn't'. IMO in the modern game 2H does not show four.

Ugly problem, I guess you are stuck rebidding 2H.

I do think opening 2nt with this hand is possible for those that hate to reverse or j/s into fake 3 or 2 card suits.

If you play 1nt=16-18 then 1c=1s=2nt(19-20) seems ok.

a reverse shows 4H come on guys even in the modern game and partner should think you have 4H. The fact that you do not does not bar the bid, you just choose what you prefer, opening 2nt or reverse into a 3 card heart suit.

I strongly dislike faking a reverse and absolutely never fake a jump rebid. But there's no other plausible alternative than reversing with 2 this time. On this hand it's no problem, since I can always support partner's 's next.
Kind regards,
Harald

This is an easy hand. 2.

AQ

This is much more difficult, but I will go for 2.

Call me a sick, sick bastard, but I might open that hand with 2NT.

Although so many people these days bypass four to respond in their four-card suit in , that I would probably survive by opening 1 and return to spades after my reverse in diamonds gets raised.

Hooray for fake reverses.

2NT (GF) is an alternative, but even I don't think this is the hand for it, 2.

2H.

If I had to explain what 2H shows, I would say
"In theory at least 4 hearts but might be a strong hand with a heart fragment and no other suitable forcing bid"

Having correctly understood the auction ...
I go with 3C, a slight underbid.
