Scoring: IMP

A FOUR PART question for your entertainment.. you hold this in 4th hand, and the bidding is simple: LHO opens 1-pass-pass to you. Do you balance [and with what] in the following situations:

1) IMPS
2) MP's
3) IMP barometer match, last hand, you are 6 imps ahead.
4) IMP barometer match, last hand, you are 6 imps behind.

:) :D

(no expert, as always).

I think partner has about a 14 count with a mountain of clubs. I'm not greedy- I'll take the -2 and go on. That should still be at least 6 IMPs.

I'd X if we were further behind, or they weren't vulnerable, as we need more than the leave in is likely to get us.

1D at mps is very clear for me.

Vul at imps I pass, but I wouldn't criticize 1D.

Well, yeah, but that would be even more of a reason not to bid, IMHO.

(Sorry, not sure how I miscounted the hand. I expect partner to have 9-12 hcp and lots of clubs, not 14).

Partner made no S/H OC= misses 5-suit, 4-suit with 2 honors.
Partner made no X= not 4-4M nor 4-3M with plus hcp.
Partner made no 1D OC= no 5card D decent, nor 4-card D with 2 honors hoping for Major response.
He has C long. Double then double their escapes OR take undoubled set?
Need a killing to Double. Down 6imp, yep. MP yep and hope later auction is OK.

Double under every conceivable circumstance.

Well, I suppose I might pass if the opponents were playing a strong club, and RHO passed :P

Double always, match conditions are not a reason to spurn an utterly normal action.

Double seems right.

1 is technically accurate (right HCP minimum, right number and quality of diamonds), but risks partner getting too excited about nothing.

The only cause for reconsideration might be if we are white versus red and partner has a high tendency of overcalling 4-card majors (especially with club values), or at any colors if he does that very frequently. If this is his style, the majors might be mirages, such that 1 is a more practical bid.
"Gibberish in, gibberish out. A trial judge, three sets of lawyers, and now three appellate judges cannot agree on what this law means. And we ask police officers, prosecutors, defense lawyers, and citizens to enforce or abide by it? The legislature continues to write unreadable statutes. Gibberish should not be enforced as law."

If I am going to bid something other than pass, then double is the right hoice but I think this is a closer decision than others have made it out to be.

I have this nagging feeling that LHO is about to jump to 3N if we give him another chance to bid on a holding such as:

Ax Ax Kx AK10xxxx

I really don't think this hand contains enough defensive values to desire to defend 1C doubled, and I don't like the stiff club Q. I would be a lot more comforatable with double if it was the heart Q instead.

If I pass and partner has made a trap pass of 1C, we will at least be plus. If I double, partner may risk defending expecting better reopening values or may go overboard in competition later.

I''ve talked myself into it. I'll pass at any form of scoring. I may hate myself in the morning.
Is the word "pass" not in your vocabulary?
So many experts, not enough X cards.

I am the most reckless bidder usually, but this hand vulnerable I pass at all kinds of scoring. With confidence. I don't have a Ten, I have only one Ace and no Kings, I have a useless Q, my longest suit is a minor... These 10 points are not worth fighting with, they look more like 7 to me.
