p 1D 3S ?
What should North bid here ? I bid 4H but is there a better bid?
the auction then went...
4S P P 5H
5S P P ?
Do you bid 6H, Dbl or pass to allow ptr to decide?
6H makes on anything but a diamond lead as you can
ruff two clubs in dummy...
Cheers

How should the bidding go ?

Both D lead AND H lead kill the contract! I think I'd bid 4H first. When they bid 5S, I'll Dbl (optional) and partner will pass it in.

Heart lead means you get one ruff but Diamond finesse covers the loss of the ruff in this layout...
In fact makes on any lead I think?

On the actual layout, 6H is cold, but that doesn't make it a good contract. You will get a trump lead very frequently on this auction to cut dummy's ruffing power and to avoid blowing a trick. And if a trump is lead, 6H goes down unless the diamonds are Kxx with West--much against the odds. A diamond lead is harmless--it eliminates any posssibe diamond loser and lets you get your club ruffs.
I think Free's bidding suggestion is 100% correct, especially at this vulnerabilty. You only need to put them down two to score more than your game and slam is against the odds.

Depending on what 5 H means with my hand I think with most pd's I bid 6 H directly, but good thing about all my pd's is that they pass that lousy 1D opening hand. In all reality y have a 9 count. So when I go down my pd finds out what an opening hand is, and when I make :-X When in doubt bid what y think y can make, I have first round control in 3 suits with a pd that opened, if y have a scientific way to find out, good for you, but I don't think very many of us do. Maybe if direct 5 H bid is asking to bid 6 with tophonor in H. I am starting to think maybe I am only one around that has sane pd's hehehe

There's a difference between insane players and players with another style! Some never open with less than 11HCP, others open with 8+. Some need 7 card to preempt, others 6 card, I only need 5 The more agressive, the more insane it looks. But I still haven't made a preempt at 3-level with a 4 card (maybe a thought when I play against you ;D)... The biggest issue is that your partner needs to know your style, and hopefully play the same way. If you open very light, then your partner has to keep that in mind when desciding what to bid.

Obviously some of you have seen my "sound, disciplined" openers....lol

Point well taken, agression is good 8) but , ok in MY style, I expect pd to have at least a decent hand when opening in first or second seat And preempting on 4 card suit at 3 level is a lot of fun, last time I did opps got to slam completely miplayed the hand, and we won big imps, the Match and the KO. So it does work, only not against me hehehe 8)

I can't pass to let partner decide because there have been 2 passes to me and another one will end the auction.
6H makes even on a trump lead. I win in dummy, take the diamond hook and when it succeeds I cash the ace and cross to dummy in trumps to continue diamonds, thus making when West holds the king even if he holds 2 or 4, or if he holds 5 when trumps were 1-1.
5S is one off double-dummy.
