Does anyone know how to add emojis when chatting using a browser client on a desktop?

The same way you type emojis with any other application.

Windows: https://www.windowsc...oard-windows-10

I can do:
; ) wink
: D grin
: $ blush
: ) smile
: ( frown
: P tongue

But I've seen people with iPads can do clapping hands etc - can they be replicated using character combinations?

Sure, windows key + "." gives you access to MANY emojis.
