We had a disaster on this auction recently and I have been pondering it for a while.

What in your opinion is the best use of double?

These options occur to me:

1. Takeout for the two unbid suits

2. Takeout of opener's suit - catering to responder psyching

3. Penalties - also catering to a psyche

I believe that the USA currently hold only the World Championship For People Who Still Bid Like Your Auntie Gladys - dburn
dunno how to play 4 card majors - JLOGIC
True but I know Standard American and what better reason could I have for playing Precision? - Hideous Hog

imo, second variant ("Takeout of opener's suit - catering to responder psyching").

I play 2. takeout of opener's suit. I also play 4y as natural.

I normally pass but if I double it will be for option 4 - all purposes option based on values. Double is often leading to disasters and I try to avoid bids with no clear or natural description.

This means if takeout in minors I instead bid 4NT. If takeout in M+m I bid 5+cards suit.

I'm with Frances. It's quite common for RHO to baby psyche (usually a major) when he has a fit for the x suit, so double is take-out of x and 4y is natural.

It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice

Also interesting is what is the best use of 3m p 4M X. Now you dont really want to have to bid 5M natural but the takeout X could be useful... I've seen this psyche about 3 times though and it's always worked well because they couldnt X for penalty.

Yes, but they also have their 4M bid naturally more often and you are more likely to want to do a t/o double of 4M. The sequence is so rare that I don't know what's best.

4M was a psych at both the only two times I have seen this sequence.
