Scoring: MP

1-(1)-Pass-(2)
3-(4)-?

Do you agree with your initial pass? Do you now pass or bid 5? If you pass, what's your lead?

I would have passed initially, now I bid 5C, but it's close.

equal vul saves at matchpoints are not an easy way to earn a living: they rarely get you a good score, partly because the typical mp field is weak. In any event, -500 seems highly probable. I have the worst possible holding and little help elsewhere. So pass seems clear.

Having passed: the 'normal' lead looks like the Q, but I doubt there is any hurry in that suit. The opps rate to hold 7+ cards in s so their losers there are not disappearing very often. On the other hand, it is quite possible that declarer has a good red 2-suiter and that a loser may be going away, so I lead a .

Ax AJ10xx AQJxx x opposite xxxxx Qxxx Kxx x is the kind of layout to be worried about.

In a 4-card major system I would have bid 3 but agree with pass if clubs can be short. I will pass again over 4 at love all. Call me unimaginative, but I will lead a club. If nothing else, I will win the post-mortem as opposed to what might happen if a non-club lead (Q) is wrong.

Not least because 5 only costs 300 since partner holds Kxx Kx x AKQJxxx

(Okay they can make 5 :D )

I hate it when I am taken literally :D :D B)

The decision to bid or defend is based on a wide range of hand types and expectancies. The bulk of hand types will lead to 500 or worse. Having decided to defend, the decision about opening lead can be based on other considerations: on most layouts, leading either black suit will usually break even, but there will be a set of hands on which one black suit will fare better than the other. My concern was that, when it mattered, a lead was most likely to be essential... not to set the contract but to save a precious overtrick.

This looks like a reasonable hand for pard.

hm....5 is cold, so I bid it.

Yeah, the first pass is normal. The only initial raise i'd make is if pard had opened 1 and RHO had doubled. The preemptive value is too great to ignore.

I'll bid 5. In addition to 5 often being a good sacrifice (and occasionally making), the opponents may well guess wrong to compete to 5. Passing only wins when 4 fails (hard to believe given my club length) or when 5 was a bad sacrifice and the opponents were defending doubled (possible, but we need both an unlucky lie of the cards and good judgement by the opponents, which is a bet I'm willing to take on this one).

Glad to see my 5 bid had some support. Apologies for the lead question - at the table I decided that a club lead would have let 4 make, I've only just realised that it does not!
