Take-out. I have a clear agreement here: extras with short spades, 1-4-5-3, 1-3-5-4, 2-4-4-3 or 1-4-4-4. With 18-19 balanced, too many spades and not four hearts I pass. We can't make anything because partner is broke, and we will struggle against 1NTX, again because partner is broke. If I have extras and shape, I would like to compete.

I know that we can beat 1NT. I will settle for 50 instead of 100 and won't lose any sleep over it.

Agree, should be takeout, especially at imps.

The question is "What do you think about the double by North?" Well I think it was meant as penalty, though it should be takeout. It is a very poor double as 1NT is not an easy beat unless you have the nous to lead to your partner's J of C at some stage.

Katherine, sorry but I don't understand your question. Why should the X be alerted?

Feel sorry for South on this and I guess his 2H bid is ok. I misread the convoluted formatting originally, so I edited this. Nth deserves to be punished for this.

Ron, after all my confusion with doubles I was trying to be funny :)

North's dbl is for penalty or take-out, depending on partnership agreement. I would bid 2D instead of 2H as South.

I actually think that penalties has a better case here. 1NT is very often made on a misfit, and the opening side can easily have 21-23 hcp in the deal. To double here for penalties is a two-edged sword, but it makes some sense.

Still, this dbl is more of a partnership agreement thing, and most agreements state that this is a take-out situation.

I don't think this can be penalty. If North has spades strength, he's badly positioned. If he hasn't, spades may run.

Compare to
1x-pass-pass-1y
pass-1NT-pass-pass
dbl (penalty)

I have some sympathy for 2 though, just in case dbl was meant as penalty. Sinceif it's t/o it probably doesn't matter much if you bid 2 or 2.
