This hand from last weekend's InterProvincial tournament in Dublin..
4H by South, no opps bidding..
South North
S: x A1097
H: AK7xx Jxx
D: Kxx J8xx
C: J8xx AK

defence starts with 2D to A and 10D returned.
I'm not good at deriving the % lines on this sort of hand..
..any ideas? ruffing 3 spades in hand and trying to make 10th trick
with JH looks attractive.. or cash AK Hearts and play x-ruff? .. this looks
dead-in-the-water if Hearts 4-1 .. or did I miss something? B)

i don't know either, but i'd take KD, spade to A, ruff spade, club to A, ruff spade, club to K, ruff spade, draw 2 round of trumps and lead a club toward the HJ

Hmm....seeing that this was in Ireland and seeing that you were playing it, Martin, I am surprised you are not in 7H xx and lost the event by one Imp!!

Seriously, I think ruffing 3S in hand, using the AS and the C entries looks best to me. That gives you 9 tricks and good chances for the 10th.

PS. How did you go in the tournament?

I don't know :-)
dK, club to the ace, club king, heart to the A
club ruff. Spade ace and spade ruff.
And then try to ruff the fourth club with the hJ.

How about winning diamond king and playing back a diamond. If RHO has 2 diamonds and LHO plays a 4th diamond for RHO to ruff, maybe RHO is ruffing with long trumps. With diamonds 3-3, you are home on 3-2 trumps or single trump queen. Probably better than to play for 4-4 spades.
