Scoring: IMP

(1) - P - (1NT)* - X
(P) - 2 - (2) - X
(P) - ?

*5+

Had this hand in a team's match last night.

What's your call?

strongly disagree with second x at imps.unless partner promises 4s 110%.
btw would take 2nt over 1nt as minors.....not silly.

I don't understand your comments at all Mike.

I'm asking about this hand, not any of the others around the table.

I agree with 2D.

I have no clue what to do next, I'm not rebidding xxx! I have seen the hands so it is hard to think about it objectively.
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

There were playing roughly 2/1, with the obvious addition of the kaplan inversion.

sorry did not see 1nt as spades? let alone 5or 7 or 9 spades?=spades? what does 5+mean...5 spades.....12spades or what ? As usual the opp are telling us a half story..not the whole,100% story of what their bidding means!...If 1nt means 5 spades ....99% of the time ok...but that is not what they are saying?
In any event 3d now? I still hate x of 2h. Just bid hand.......

The 1NT response shows 5 or more spades. I'm not entirely sure what Mike's problem is - 5+ seems to say "5 or more spades" fairly clearly to me...

Partner's double is therefore the equivalent of 1H P 1S x i.e. initially shows both minors.

Partner has shown an absolutely huge hand, and probably only 3 diamonds.
I pass, but I'm not happy about this.
I expect a balanced 19-20-count or so.
I may well be -470 here.

5+ obviously means "at least 5 ", it's quite standard treatment on conventioncards...

I pass. If I had a decent hand I'd passed 1NT so partner should know I'm weak, he knows what my best minor suit is, so it can't be takeout dbl.

The one hope is that if we are -470 that we would've have been -500 if I bid.
I pass.

I pass too, but am more sanguine about beating this. Opps may well be playing a 7 card fit at the two level with less than half the deck. If partner has good controls, you can beat this two tricks.

Well LOTT fans can make a table for 14 trumps and 14 tricks ;)

We in 3m They in 2 Bid Pass
9 5 +110 +500
8 6 -50 +300
7 7 -300 +100
6 8 -500 -470
5 9 -800 -570

Then a true LOTT-ian will notice that the scores in the Pass column are all better than those in the bid column etc.

Of course with 15 total tricks it won't work out just like this but you can't have it all

I can't do anything else than pass.

Partner knows I'm weak and I've already give my preference in minor so I just hope I have a trump trick.

Ok Part II.

You pass (as did I).

What do you lead?

Torn between a trump and the club knave. Think I go with the club.

4 small in opps side suit (spades here) is usually a warning: as we have length without honors in the sidesuit, usually dummy has AKQJx or similar and declarer is short.

That means he can discard quickly losers on spades if we lead passively (e.g. a trump)

We need to cashout the side suit winners and not play a waiting defense. So I'll go with the club Knave

The 2 bid was voluntary, thus chances are we're not going to get rich defending. I bid 3.

Having passed, the club jack seems fair.

I was west, Arend (cherdano) was east, and we were playing Ben's (inquiry's) system with some minor changes. Not sure why we get rolleyes for the Kaplan inversion. I believe that Kaplan inversion is not allowed at low level ACBL games, so perhaps some American players have not had much contact with it.

We played 3 12-board matches against Matt and his regular f2f partner, this was a particularly interesting hand I thought. Looking back at it now I think that Matt was the only one who clearly made the right calls on this hand.

Last week I also played with Arend against Matt, and after we only barely set their 2SX Matt told me: always lead trump against low level doubled contracts. I replied: I disagree, think before leading against low level doubled contracts. Fortunately Matt didn't listen .

I have to go with Frances on this one (not a bad overall strategy on anyone). Partner has a moose, and I have four trumps. I too suspect parnter is shortish in diamonds (three) and has good clubs.

I don't want to lead a heart, despite the "general strategy" to do so. Partner first double was takeout, so while he may have good hearts or spades, he was prepared for me to bid a minor. So he doesn't have spades and I don't have spades. I want to set our tricks up. The one suit partner has is clbus, and I am shortish there. I will start with an unimaginative jack of clubs....
