Hi everyone,

Yesterday I had the following auction:

1* Pass 1* Pass
1* Dbl 4 Pass

1: Polish (almost)
1:
-> 1. 0 - 6 any
-> 2. 7 - 11 no 4-card major and no other bid
-> 3. 16+ balanced without 4M or good 5m
1: almost forcing, may be 3 cards only if 12 - 14 balanced
Dbl: Take out of

4: For you to find out

What is 4 and what do you bid on

:D

My first guess would be that this has the same meaning as

p : (p) : 1 : (x) , 4.

Whatever that might be (fit?). If this is impossible I'll have to think again.

Well if 1H can be 3 and a weak NT I would not want to bypass 3N with the 2425 or 1435 hands that have been suggested. What would you bid with those hands without the x over 1H?
And why don't those hands start with a natural 2C over 1C???

I don't particularly like that since we have to include all hands into 1 but that's how Tomek, Jutek and tomi2 play.

So also 1 on that.

1 denies a 4-card major unless 6 HCP or less.

Since you may have a balanced hand without a real club suit I would say that 4 has to be a splinter.

If the 1H rebid guarantees 4+ clubs, then 4C by responder should NOT be a splinter ( I do not like splinters in pard's bid suit)...

I much prefer 4C as keycard for clubs.

If, instead the 1H rebid does not guarantee clubs, then the 4C bid seems like a real enigma to me, probably a splinter could be a possible meaning....

Responder did not bid
- 2 = GF with s which buries 4 as KC
- 3 = 6 crds with 2 top honours
- XX

1 may include 5-11 pts with a m (5-6 cards, not qualifying for a jump to 3m)

Perhaps the intention of responder is to put as much pressure as possible on opps because the s must be somewhere and 4 is down :P I listen to my inner voice and pass. But I did not yet talk to my psychiatrist... And it is really late...

I would take it as 5-6,H, very distributional with a huge fit and shortness in

The kind of hand Frances gave.

Just returned from the psychiatrist. He said I should give up playing bridge and forget trying to understand men (3 minutes for 130 €).
Before I do: I didn't really think that partner had many s. What I don't understand is the message of the SPL here. Why not 4?

Maybe you should forget playing bridge with your psychiatrist. Partner wanted to leave the door open for a slam in case I had a 18+ hand.
