Scoring: IMP

You are ahead by 4 IMPs halfway through a 12-board team match. Would you open 2S?
Please note: I am interested in boring, bog standard, 2/1.

Good thing you put other in there... as 1 is at least a possibility for some of us. I would probably go with the field and open this 2 at the current conditions, however.

Ben! Yes 25 Zar, but isn't it allowed to downgrade Qx and your long suit due to lack of texture? Also, 6-3-2-2 is one of the shapes slightly overvalued by Zar points, if I recall Tysen's numbers correctly.

pass

Why bother with 6322 shape and an outside Ace unless you play Karen McCallum style weak 2 bids.

I thought it was close and passed. I was playing with Ben and I think I should have opened 2S, Ben would not play me for a better suit or shape.

To answer the "why bother" question by Mike777, at the other table they did open 2S and the pressure was to much for our teammates: they sacrificed over 2S-4S and went for 1400 in 5HX (4S is against the odds but makes). Preempts often work.

Opening 2 will probably protect the club queen. I have a lot in my hand for 2 but being NV and up by 4 I'm not really afraid of missing a game.
So yes, I will open this 2

With my f2f partner this is a constructive opening with (1 opening), but with everybody else I'd consider this an easy 2 opening. 3 would be weaker and with a shortness <_<

Tnx for the 'other'-option B) ;)

I would never open 2 (or 1) spade with this but it is a style thing. It has it's moments. Advocates of wide ranging agressive preempts would cite this hand though.

We actually got to 4S which is a terrible spot. Hannie stopped in 2. So one might argue that was a win for the pass. However...

LHO bid 4N over my 4S bid with xx JTxxx KQJxx x white/white. This crazy bid was punished harshly. So it goes with the preempts, sometimes you are in a theoretically bad spot and then the opps save you. I think the worse the opposition the more likely something like this is to happen.

I'm preempting with this one. Usually I prefer less defense, but passing just doesn't put enough pressure on the opps.
A bit of blatant self-pimping - I've got a new poker book that's getting good reviews.

Lots of defense here, but that's not necessarily bad for a preempt. After all, many points are won when opps overbid after a preempt, and this hand hints at that.

I would bid 2, but I'd prefer the suit to be other than spades, because it's harder for opps to bid over spades than the rest.

Wouldn't be surprised to go for a number by opening this one. The hints are all there: low ODR, broken suit, soft values... heck, the more I think of it, the more I convince myseld a 1 opener is the technically correct bid. Definitely would bid 1 in 3rd seat.

I opened a hand very similar to this last Monday, and my partner went spare at me. I thought twice about it, but then decided the field would be doing the same thing, so I wasn't going to get a bad result by opening.

I wouldn't open it 1 though, I prefer a better hand to open at the 1 level.

2 of cause

Good opps don't make "unforced errors", so i'll put some pressure on opps.
Furthermore opps should learn that sometimes my weak 2's are solid  , they'll be more carefull next time.

Important question: What did I discuss with partner about style? If nothing, then 2.

Sorry but you need to drug me before I even considering 1.

I don't think that that's a good argument for making the bid (possibly carries more weight at matchpoints, but who plays matchpoints?).

That said, I'm favourable and in first seat. I don't much like it, but I'm going to bid.

Edit: oh, none vulnerable. Will depend on what partner expects, then. Think I'll probably still bid most of the time.
