What do you bid now? Partner's 2H is fairly similar to a 2/1 or SAYC 2H bid in competition, as far as our agreements go.

pass. I have no game interest, only 4 trumps and a balanced hand with lots of defense.

I'm also passing. I can't see any attractive bids, and I can't see much that goes wrong if I pass.

Pass seems pretty clear to me. ♣K is of dubious value on the auction. I don't think they have stolen anything from us if partner can't bid again.

X is ok but I'd like even more defense. My CK is pretty dubious as roland said.

I would not opposite a single raise, and especially not now that my opponents have told me that my ♣K is most likley not worth the 3 hcp I counted when I picked my hand up.

hum.. club king is bad, but we do have the balance of points. I guess I'd double, though not very happily about it.

b ), mainly with the focus of playing 3H or 4H.
It is not a penalty double.

I was about to argue with you until I reread your post and found we agree on b :)

However, were the scoring MPs instead, I think partner should pass the double as often as not at these colours if in the upper range and not in posession of a 9-card trump fit, even if not holding anything special in the enemy suit. Typically, the three level is for the opponents, and plus 200 would be great where minus 100 might be a disaster - although I admit this is just my opinion. Sometimes I like to gamble a little when the payoff is big enough and to me, +200 on a partscore hand at matchpoints is a humungous payoff.
I'd rather have a bottle in front of me than a frontal lobotomy - but it might improve my bridge.

From what I understand of Acol, which is not a lot, partner does not show 4 trumps with 2♥.

Luckily I have a nice bid to describe my hand now, pass, since after the 2♣ overcall I devalue my hand to be a weak NT hand.

Anyway, I decided to double, which was risky since partner decided to leave it in. He held:

Kxxx
xx

and we duly wrote down -670 on the card. I pointed out that double was not 100% for penalty, and that with 4 trumps and a 5 count, he should pull. He disagreed, saying that doubles are for penalty once we've found a fit.

Oh well.

It all depends on your agreement. Is double penalty or not, or is it a game try in hearts? No matter what, as previously said, you don't have a double with that hand. You have no penalty of 3♣ and you have no game try opposite a single raise.

This has become a likely 12 count on the auction.

This is a frequently-repeated debate.
I play double as penalties here (and no, I wouldn't have doubled... though I might at matchpoints). I also wouldn't have pulled on your partner's hand.

But it's all a matter of agreement.
