Running a duplicate tournament
By uday
Sunday, June 15, 2003Once the tournament has started, there isn't much to be done except:
- The moment it starts, check the table list. If you see a sitout pair at a table, replace the sitout pair with 2 substitutes
- You then make your "welcome" announcements to the tourney. Instruct the players to call you if their opponents or partner seem stuck; I usually like to tell them to give the disconnected person a chance to return before yelling for the director.
- Then just wait; you'll see an occasional call (or more!) for the director. Usually connection problems are the main reason you will be called to a table. When I arrive at a table, I always ask "Need a director?" - many calls are accidental, or resolve themselves before I arrive However, you will still find yourself making a lot of substitutions. This seems to be the primary role of the director once the tourney has started
- Up to you whether you want to get into the business of score adjustments. I almost never do. Similarly, I discourage complaints about alerts, lack of alerts, poor explanations, etc.
