In standard defensive scheme double is an ambiguous bid that can be made with 3 standard hand types. While other hand types do well, problems usually arise when doubler has 5♦+ or 5♥+ and he must start bidding his main suit at the 3rd level.
[1♣] - 1♦
5♦+4M overcall strength+ or 5♦+ ~16+; Forcing.
If 3rd hand passes, 1M = f1; 1N = constructive ~9-11; 2♣ weak or strong; 2M = suit+fit; 2N strong, natural INV.
Analyses suggest that 1♦ can handle also hands like ♠QTx ♥AK92 ♦AKJ8 ♣93
[1♣] - 2♦
as a normal, constructive overcall (virtually denies holding 4M)
2♦ does consume bidding space, but we are ahead in describing our hand.
[1♣] - 2♣
5♥+ too strong for 1♥ and wrong for 1N; Denies 4♠
===>
2♦ - ART force; INV+
2♥ - not much to say, less than INV
2♠ - NF, something like ♠KJTxxx...
2N - ♥ fit, INV+
3♣ - ♦'s weak or strong.
3♦ 6♦+ good suit, looking for 3NT; NF. Something like ♦KQTxxx...
2♥ could be Michales or Intermediate JO VUL, WJO NV.
Objective assessments and suggestions are welcome.
